"gesture (m)" and "gesture (f)" are companion pieces that serve as illusionary portraits of contradictions. One’s identity and image is mirrored by roles in society that are bound by position and gender. These pieces investigate how individuals are invisibly supported by other groups who have an investment in that image. By accentuating a period when roles between men and women were almost black and white, viewers find themselves looking into a mirror of gray, contemplating how these ideas have either changed or stayed the same.

This image is an interior detail viewed with the aid of a mirror. When installed, the audience looks through a three-inch viewing area to experience the illusion.
